UNESCO INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY
Libraries for literacies: how libraries enhance new forms of literacy
UNESCO INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY

Since 1967, International Literacy Day (ILD) celebrations have taken place annually around the world to celebrate the importance of literacy, recognize it as a matter of dignity and human rights and advance the agenda of a more literate and sustainable society. Literacy empowers and liberates people. Beyond every person’s inherent right to education, literacy improves lives by expanding individual’s capabilities, which in
turn reduces poverty, increases participation in the labour market, and has positive effects on health and sustainable development.

On the occasion of International Literacy Day UNESCO, The Cultural Department of Regione Umbria, Comune di Orvieto, International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) - Literacy and Reading Section, Italian Library Association - Umbria Section and National Public Libraries Commission, have collaborated on this initiative to promote literacy worldwide.

INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON THE OCCASION OF THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF NATI PER LEGGERE - BORN TO READ PROGRAMME

Nati per Leggere (Born to read) is a national programme that promotes reading aloud to children from an early age. Scientific studies show that the brain has the greatest capacity for development and learning in the early years of life. Starting to read daily to children from a very young age is not only an important developmental factor but also vital in protecting against socio-cultural disadvantage and an opportunity to build a positive and curious outlook on the world. Nati per Leggere is based on a strong alliance between pediatricians, librarians, educators, midwives, NpL volunteers, and families. The program began in Umbria in 1999, in Assisi, during the national congress of the Cultural Association of Pediatricians. The first library in Umbria to develop an “NpL Network” was the Orvieto Public Library. Celebrating 25 years of NpL in Orvieto, this seminar aims to provide an opportunity to learn about new scientific research results and the importance of emergent literacy, as well as to get to know other international programmes and best practices.
